Watching the world go by

I can sit here all night checking out the view and watching the world buzz by. View from GFBFF's cool place.
Had a nice quiet weekend couple of weeks ago, spending time with loved ones and just catching up.
Sis has gone away and moved to NY, and the house seems quieter though she isn't as noisy as she used to be. Going to have to deal with the fact she will always be 21 hours away. Change is unavoidable and we all have to learn to deal with it - good or bad.

The moment just reminds me of a song I used to repeat it over and over again in my music player.

If I lay here.
If I just lay here.
Would you lie with me,
And just forget the world?

Crap

Laptop freeze while trying to post this entry out. Haha, laptop needs a break!

Sorry if I have been late with my posts on Slingers match reviews and pictures. It's tough when the world seems to have recovered from the worst crisis ever known to men...yeah right..and thus workload has increased as I still am holding on to 2 job scopes, one apparently based here and another one in Taiwan. Life is even tougher when the laptop keeps freezing and my reports did not seem to get saved. I guess my laptop needs a break as the late night conference calls are now a frequent occurrence. Bear with me! Not you readers..I mean the laptop...Dell coming to fix you up on Monday. For now, time to log off and give me and laptop a break.

Procrastinating

Thought about writing out New Year resolutions, then decided it's best to K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid); so it will be sticking to just B.L.E.H :p (Be Living Extremely Happy). Then I look at the amount of books I have yet to finish reading, and at least 4,000 photographs I have left to look through and give some minor editing. From Slingers game vs Thailand Tigers, to my trips to UK, Siem Reap, pictures of cars and girls at FD, SIN events. It's insane especially when US is on leave till 4th Jan and things are slow at work, yet still busy with gatherings, drinking and lots of stuff. Well, procrastinate so I will, it is after all -Yuletide season.

Attempting to fly while blading at high speed is not advised without wrist and knee guards.

Luckily I busted my wrists from rollerblading, and after 2 weeks of rest, it got worse from go-karting last Sunday, so I am going to take a break from sports to fulfill those inner peaceful moments till 2010...with my soul PS3, books and PC.

Till then...my final 189th post of the year; ~65% increase from 2008. Thanks for reading and sharing my world...except the twins, you guys should stop reading and go read xiaxue's blog instead - this is an insightful post by her which I have shared on Facebook and still applauding her for exposing this crap diplomatic immunity incident.

LG sucks and reflection of time schedule

Life has been really busy lately. So I have no time to send my mobile phone for repair and thus, friends who don't message or call me...will slowly drip off from my schedule..which isn't really a bad thing. I am also known to be a procrastinator to such unimportant things which can wait and coincidentally this blog entry was due 2 weeks ago. Apparently I have been wearing for weeks - one of my fav t-shirt that goes "Procrastinator Unite! Tomorrow..." bought from my favorite Target mart  in US.
Also never believe in product ads on youtube and reviewers anymore. Below is a video review of my LG Renoir which supposedly can withstand baking, washing and even running over by a car...but apparently not by my go-kart going at 90-100kmh which is considerably lighter than a car..haha
Here is my go-kart aka long time army friend Jonathan's account of it and his wise words of advise on what not to do on a go-kart.

Anyway here is my typical after-work schedule which prevents me from actually having a relationship.

Mondays: Rest day from a crazy weekend since US is still Sunday...well that is until 8pm. Normally no conference calls so time is spent with the family or with my buddies at usual drinking hole.

Tuesdays: Normally 8pm conference calls. Otherwise tennis with my ex-colleagues or last minute movies with my movie buddy.

Wednesdays: Typically 10pm conference calls, otherwise alternative basketball scrimmages/tennis date or last minute movies.

Thursdays: Strangely normally conference calls only start at 10 or 11pm, in time to be back from my 2-hr Wing Chun classes which start at 8pm.

Fridays: Conference calls around 8-12am otherwise party or drinking time, otherwise it is NBA Live 10/Command and Conquer online with friends till 2-5am.

Saturdays: Morning check urgent work emails and noon is basketball matches at Jammers League, night is gathering with friends who have pre-booked in advance.

Sundays: Either morning photoshoots or in JB for go-karting followed by either shooting live basketball with Slingers at indoor stadium or buddies drinking gathering.

Noticed a lot of drinking...well here's a reminder that drinking is good for cognitive brain functions and helps in sleeping when you have too much to think.

Inline Skating

Saw this video link from a german friend on Facebook. Got me all excited and now I want to get back to skating every weekend. But need to get new blades, my old one is really dying on me as all the plastic straps have broken and I need crank straps to hold it in. Anyway for those who love inline skating here is the clip.

My weather-beaten Roces, only my second baby in my 16 years of blading!

Saw this new Skate park at East Coast couple of weeks ago. Have to try it some day!

5 more to go..

All thanks to KP, I am 6 down since March and 5 to go to my 2003 target. Hope the increased routines on Thurs and Saturdays and hopefully more weekday games and return to cycling will aid in speeding up the process.

Also got 3 weeks to improve my shooting to beat the Jammers and shoot over the other legendary 3pt shooter, Adrian. Back in BBAXN, we used to trade 3pt for 3pt as he so vividly recalls after last week's match.

So far so great

It has been a great week so far since last Wednesday. I realised sometimes doing something crazy might actually give you something great. Call it fate, call it Serendipity.

Serendipity 奇缘 is the effect by which one accidentally discovers something fortunate, especially while looking for something else entirely.

Do what you have to do, to get what you want!

Was watching the Great Debaters, a film directed and acted by Denzel Washington(acting as Melvin Tolson) and funded by Oprah Winfrey, over the weekend. It was based on a true story of some African Americans educators in the 1930s. With Forest Whitaker acting as James Farmer Snr, an educator at Wiley College, one of only twenty five African-Americans who held Ph.D.s at the time. It was simply a great feel good movie which came across to me with bits of Mississippi Burning and Dead Poets' Society. You simply cannot go wrong with 2 Academy Award winning actors.

Just remember this line in the movie by James Farmer Snr to Jnr:

You got to do what you have to do, in order to get what you want.

This was in reference to him having to do his homework diligently, in order to get ahead in life; which I guess led him to much greatness later in life. I wished my dad had said that to me back during school days when I was playing too much! Haha but then again, in these times, James Farmer Snr's method wouldn't have probably worked and perhaps led to a greater rebellious streak in me.

Do try to get hold or rent the movie to watch.

Ouch!

It has been more than a month since I injured my finger, and I have to be constantly on a finger guard, even at home. So finally finding some time to get some rest from a flu and get some medicine and some scolding from my doctor. The doctor sent me to have an X-ray on my right ring finger, and even called me when they immediately have images that I have dislocation + mild fracture(Will post up my X-rays once I get it). This is my 2nd time trying to act brave; the other time was when I was 18 and I fell down hard on my wrist, thinking it was nothing wrong for 3 months, I had permanent ball joint stress fracture. Which led me to my downgrade in Army from Pes A to Pes C1 - many have said it was my Karma from laughing at the "chao keng" soldiers. Bummer, and my lunchtime trainings for 1 year in JC was futile. It wasn't easy building up to 20+ pull ups at a go!! Argh

Anyway will have to undergo physiotherapy at a hospital nearby my place soon, and no more bball for months to come as well as my newly picked up wakeboarding. No wonder I found it hard to grip the cable and do a 180degrees flip turn (YEAH RITE! - excuses).

Looks like I can finally indulge in more cycling and blogging crap for now. Oh yeah and back to partying...

Being busy is not TAO

It has been a hectic period of traveling, working and doing things such as cycling, wakeboarding, basketball etc. And as usual, I hardly have time for my folks and even friends find it hard to get me. Many have actually given up messaging or calling me, since my schedule can be packed till weeks later. But this being so, I hope my friends should know, that this is not TAO. I still find time to update FB, blogging, answering to IT queries, fixing PCs and laptops, and even teaching blading! Now I understand why my friends maintain their blogs and FB - to keep their friends abreast of what has been going on in their lives, but of course, not many people out there bother to read!

So hope I haven't offended anyone from the fact that it has been a busy period for me.

Always buying sneakers? It's the sign of a leader - that's me!!!

Picture of the shoes I just got lately from US and Japan (Jordan Men's Team 9.5; Jordan 1 Low East; Jordan XX2 5/8). Yeah they are all Jordans. 80% of all my shoes are Jordans, thereby making 90% Nike.

Just read this interesting poll on Yahoo...

Not sure if its true..been apprehensive on articles released online on 1st April after getting conned on mrbrown.

But this one by Reuters, should be quite accurate lar..and it gives me an excuse to get more kicks.

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - Got a passion for buying sneakers? It could be a good sign, with a poll finding that people who buy three pairs of sneakers or more a year are far more likely to be a leadership type that other people.

Mindset Media, a media company that examines personality traits of different consumers, found that people who buy more than three pairs of sneakers a year are 61 percent more likely to have the qualities of a modern leader.

These qualities were defined as having ideas and vision, and a style with others that is both inclusive and decisive.

The survey of 7,500 people, using market research group Nielsen's online panel, found multi-sneaker buyers were 50 percent more likely to be very assertive and 47 percent more likely to be spontaneous.

Lauren Arvonio, a spokeswoman for Mindset Media, said sneaker buyers were more likely to fly by the seat of their pants.

"It is often said you can tell a lot about a person by the shoes they wear, and now we have some hard data to back that up," Arvonio told Reuters.

"What is interesting is that these personality traits held true across the board, regardless of age, income, or gender."

First of all, note they mentioned sneakers, not shoes...so no pointy leather, suede shoes we wear to work kind. It's sneakers, so myself and Jase qualify!! I always wanted to put up my entire collection of my sneakers, I have so far lost count, last was about 40? Jase should have about 50 plus..

I have reached the quota for this year on having 61% possibility of being a modern leader! Wondering if we buy more than 5 pairs, do we have 80-90% leadership qualities? Haha..Now tell that to my mom who is complaining about me filling up 3/5s of the shoe rack shared by 4, not forgetting those still in their shoes boxes in my room. I leader-like leh..give me more space! Still waiting for my own place to put up my wall-to-wall shoe display case...dreaming. Right now me and Jase only got a small display glass cabinet to put the nicest ones.

Not doing our part for Mother Earth!

Raised earth's temperature by a degree. Don't flame me! The cars parked in Ridley Road by just 2 owners generates more carbon emission than the 70 here.

Of jogs and stars

Having the need to train for my impending IPPT, I took to jogging in the night when it is cooler and not much traffic. As I hit my mid-way mark of about 1.2km, the urge to quit is unbearable. I do not fathom how I can survive easily 24km of cycling against 2.4km of jogging.

If I could have my way of testing my own fitness, I would rather be cycling or roller-blading, where the impact on my joints would be less and the joy of speeding will drive my heart rate faster.

Anyhow, at the mid-way mark, I would be staring up in the skies, looking for God!!! As I will not give up..must..make...it...to...my....goal..
While up in the skies, I noticed somethings which I haven't enjoyed for a long time. The afternoon rains have been drastic, but I couldn't imagine the night skyline would be so clear. March nights are filled with many constellations in the southern hemisphere, you can easily spot 50 over stars clearly visible.

If you need a star map to spot the skies with your love ones, download here.

These are some of the Constellations of the Southern Hemisphere:

Apus, the bird of paradise
Ara, the altar
Carina, the ship's keel
Centauras, the centaur
Chamaeleon, the chameleon
Circinus, the compass
Crux, the southern cross
Dorado, the swordfish
Eridanus, the river
Grus, the crane
Hydrus, the water snake
Indus, the Indian
Lepus, the rabbit
Mensa, the table
Musca, the fly
Norma, the surveyor's level
Octans, the octant
Pavo, the peacock
Phoenix, the phoenix
Pictor, the easel
Reticulum, the net
Triangulum Australe, the southern triangle
Tucana, the toucan
Vela, the ship's sails
Volans, the flying fish

Enjoy it while it lasts!

Over hot chocolate and Famous Amos cookies - avoid coffee

Haven't been blogging lately though I have so much I wanted to talk about. From a close friend leaving her job because of misunderstandings at work, to even another who has gone to seek greener pastures in South Africa. I am having similar experiences of both and have to be discreet about it, because you never know who reads this blog entry - thus the crazy title which makes no sense to what I am about to blog.

Though it pretty much shouldn't matter because its just avenues of expressions which is just stating how one feel at that moment of blogging. But I am having my hot chocolate and cookies right now.

A close friend of mine had misunderstandings with a female/woman/bitch boss lately. It was seriously very minor, but it escalate till the fact that she needs to resign even without a job. (That's gutsy and at times encouraging to just do it) Since I started working, I had my fair share of working with women and their issues. Many female colleagues have also shared with me their experiences with working for men vs female bosses. And they all are observed to be in the same points. I shall attempt to recall from all these experiences including my own to write a dissertation on this topic.

Normally for a male boss, their common problems would be the BIG male ego, power struggle, demanding respect while not rightfully not deserving any... just to list a few. While the female boss would be having blinkered views, favoritism, demanding attention over small little issues, revengeful, spiteful, particular over every single thing once you've stepped on their toes; or actually thought to have step on their tails...just to list a few as well. Women tend to be less logical and uses more intuition.

Citing a book written by Anna Frances Grundy on Women and Computers.

Men use intelligence; women, on the other hand, use intuition. And parallel to this, men are rational and logical; women are emotional...

This is said in context of having intelligence for top jobs and thus men having a big chunk of most CEO positions.

While applying to my discussion is that women do tend to judge intuitively or instinctively, enabling them to care better for children and the elderly. And their development in these areas confine them to jobs requiring more of it in their areas of work. But of course let's not make a general sweeping statement as there are good female CEOs there, but the percentage is lower. You do not have to agree to my statements but you have to look at it objectively like Prehistorical Men are hunters and explains why all women would occasionally call men barbaric.

Anyhow most women hold terms of being emotional, intuitive, irrational, sensitive, hysterical and empathetic. And these states at certain moments can be rather explosive if you are any men who have been in a long term relationship. These states at work if not controlled due to quarrels at home or with friends, or certain periods of the month, or even hear a wrong hearsay from rumour-mongers can kill relationships at work which will end employment for many. Because, there is another trait of women which goes hang in hang with this killing spree - memory.

Women tend to bear more grudges, less forgiving, like to bring out the past etc etc..

Actually studies have been made to prove that fact:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Drinking more than three cups of coffee a day helped protect older women against some age-related memory decline, French researchers said on Monday, giving women more reason to love the world's second most popular stimulant, with the vibrator being the most popular.

Men did not enjoy the same benefit, they said. "The more coffee one drank, the better the effects seemed to be on (women's) memory functioning in particular," said Karen Ritchie at the French National Institute of Medical Research, whose work appears in the journal Neurology. "They remembered all sorts of shit to be mad at their husbands and families about, going way, way back, in some cases to when their teenaged children were babies."

The researchers followed more than 7,000 men and women in three French cities, checking their health and mental function and asking them about their current and past eating and drinking habits, their friends, and their daily activities.

They found that women who drank more than three cups of coffee per day, or its caffeine equivalent in tea, retained more of their verbal and -- to a lesser extent -- visual memories over four years.

They were also much crankier and generally more angry and difficult to get along with.

These extra-pissed-off but stimulated french women had a 33 percent lower odds of having verbal memory declines and 18 percent lower odds of having visual and spatial memory declines, compared to women who drank one cup or fewer per day and were less pissed-off.

The effect also depended on age, with women over 80 reaping more benefits from these beverages than those who were 10 to 15 years younger, Ritchie's team wrote. It was unclear whether current or former coffee consumption made the difference, and whether or not the coffee was high quality or cheap, nasty shit.

Some studies in mice have suggested that caffeine might block the buildup of proteins that lead to mental decline.

"Our best guess is that women don't metabolize coffee in the same way (as men)," she said in a telephone interview. "Also, men tend to let things go, whereas women hold onto grudges, sometimes for life, which requires that they remember more. I suppose it would have helped if I had actually talked to any of the men, but ... eh, whatever."

The average American drinks one to two cups of coffee a day, according to the National Coffee Association. The average American woman drinks three to four cups of expensive Starbucks coffee and is pissed off at someone roughly 50 percent of the time.

I rest my case and thus I carry on drinking my hot chocolate and continue my coffee abstinence for over 30 years. In light of my brave friend who left this rat caged lifestyle, for a totally new exposure, I also hope to find my own greener pastures for a mid-life career switch or to go study once more to find myself.

Life's too short to screw with people's life with pent up gender-inflicted-possible-coffee-induced frustrations. So stay off caffeine as I can't possibly tell you to be less emotional and intuitive.

Life's still good..

Recently life has been tumultuous for me. Everything doesn't seem to look as beautiful as before.

Usually in the morning, I will have the woman of my life sitting beside me - my mom, nagging at me as I drop her off work, and in the event the nagging requires a response, I would turn on the radio. Local radio stations really talk too much - Power 98, Class 95, Perfect 10-98.7 FM, my gosh either they are laced with adverts or sublimal selling, or they can be rather crude.

My love for classical music is somehow still hidden there, covered by angst of rock, alternative, punk, pop music during my adolescent periods of clubbing and extreme sports. With the windows down, and my radio tuned to Symphony 92.4 FM, I start entering another world where I start to lose focus in life and leave the rat caged environment; slowly try to merge with nature and its unhurried pace.

I smell the cold morning wind laced with dew, check out the clouds in the skies for familiar shapes, reaching out my right hand to feel the racing wind. With the radio belting out a John William overture, in that brief moment, I sense that life's still somehow good despite all the turmoils in life - God's somehow out there with a wand scattering glimmers of hope.

TP seriously reading my blog...help!

Ok..I seriously have to be careful with my words. 2 days in a row, I got breathalysed. Though this time I had it passed, had just some tame white wine with my date tonight, the scary part was, the Traffic police seem to know where I lived, because, there were almost camping right outside my place! (Star points to where I reside, and arrow is where they were waiting for me)I had to blow a lot more this time, and given the fact I normally don't blow well..come on..real men don't blow! The officer was being nice, though he kept my IC and driving license again.

He showed me the screen and I had to blow the tube hard and long before the sample is valid. And beep it was green...PASS!
Anyway 2 days in a row..crazy, I am leaving the country for awhile, until this thing blows over.

It appears there are one too many "blow"s in one post.

Or perhaps its my small japanese car..never a chick magnet, always a TP magnet! Time to change my ride or swear off drinking!

Sunday blooooody Sunday!

Sunday mornings are the happiest in the morning and saddest in the night. Happiest cos I get another weekend after a late Saturday outing and saddest when damn it's Monday tomorrow.
So as I drive down towards East Coast Park for a morning of workout and sea breeze, with U2 blasting in the background going "Sunday ..bloody .. Sunday..", its going to be a great day...
Strapping my blades up as I waited faithfully for my lazy friends to get here, I made my way to Bedok Jetty which has always be a stopping point for a view I will never fail to appreciate.

Check out the 3 tone sea...

After a teaching session to my friends..I made my way down to Parkway for a Sunday-test-of-patience-time. Was signing up for another broadband deal with Singtel as I decided to cancel the slow Starhub service I have been getting. Despite the 8mb free upgrade, I am getting only a max of about 300kbps as my friends who have switched over are getting 800kbps. As I get older...I realised time is something I cannot afford to waste. So indeed I need a faster car and some kick ass faster broadband connection. But here I am queuing a freaking 1 and a 1/2 hour to get some service, and damn the connecting service isn't immediate, I have to wait about 4 days to get it up. And wait another week to get the service guy over, so I decided to bring the set back on my own and fix it up myself in 4 days time.

After all that waiting, and working out in the morning, now its time for some fat gaining chillout session with the buddies as KP is celebrating his annual malt aging day. He is as usual the 1st to cross those numbers followed by Kun which is next week.
With great pizza and lots of beer, 7 darksides and another 2 wonderful Brewerkz complimentary jugs for the birthday boy; we enjoyed the Australian Tennis Open match where Djokovic went up against unseeded Tsonga. He played well but eventually lose in 4 sets to Djokovic who earlier broke Federer's streak of 10 straight Grand Slam finals in the semis.

What fine beer with tennis watching to savour.

Time for some birthday cake cutting as bought by Jase and his boo who faithfully went down to Fullerton to get the cake but it has indefinitely been closed and we have to settle for a Bakerzin cake instead. We'll try again next week for Kun's birthday.

Enjoying the chocolate "cigar".
Man we getting old...soon it will be my turn..damn it!
