Playing dirty

Not sure if you guys have been catching Taiwanese drama serials these days, but it sure beats our own Singaporean productions where the standard seems to be dropping of late. Anyway, a private joke on this drama serial that I am catching right now every evening -hooked on it.
"Do you know the hottest question from auntie to auntie these days is: 今晚有没有做"爱? "

So the current period in the drama is about Taiwanese provincial elections and we can see 2 main characters, as usual one bad guy and one good guy going at it to be elected as a representative for the people in a certain Taiwanese province, and when it comes to elections and politics...they all play dirty, especially in Taiwan where the fist and mouth comes into play almost all the time.

Well in Singapore, fist and mouth? Want to be slapped with a lawsuit or spend some nights in prison? To the repressed citizens, we have but the internet, blogs, forums, chat rooms, hidden behind avatars but still trackable from IP if you put out insensitive, "flamed" statements. We can all see how elections are suppose to run, not just in Taiwan, but all over the world...you have to get dirty. So is it a surprise now that we see political inclined sites being threatened, forced to be gazetted of late? It is not a surprise, it shouldn't be..welcome to Singapore. This is how we work, from the time we were being separated from Malaysia, patriots/mavericks were being labelled communists-> imprisonment without trial for long periods of time-> banishment. Or to more recent 90s-2000s period when bankrupting individuals or claiming they fill up wrong forms with intent to cheat seems to be the new game-play; Sillyporeans have over time, become apathetic or clearly in despair.

Seriously, to me...why even bother. When the population hits 7 million, you just hope you are not in the lower income sector clearing the dust that has finally settled. Singaporeans should just forget about wasting $ on elections and just mandate a single party state/city/whatever-you-want-to-call-it-law-minister. Just concentrate on making $, and don't care about what policies were made when you were 20 or 30, whether the CPF withdrawal ceiling is 65 or 78, when you hit 60s, and in X years time, you will be forced to retire even before you can draw on your CPF like the recent ruling. You don't know what new rules? Well you better go find out because in time to come...some cheaper foreign talent is waiting for the musical chair you have been hogging. So what happens if you don't have enough savings for the next X years before you get your CPF? Macdonald's? Oops you better be cheaper than the other options waiting...F*** me.. yes you can have my can drink, but only when I'm done with it.

Anyway politics is about being dirty, only the strongest will survive. Strangely from my observation, for our elitist scholars who tend to be fielded by our ruling party, I thought they were the nice white long sleeved people who grew up quiet, cultured and well mannered; and often played by the rules. Somehow the opposition parties seems too gentlemanly to be playing this game. I expected more of them, hooligan and all since they are not elites. I guess this quote holds true:
"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men."
by John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton, 1887 in a letter to a Bishop.
For me I doubt many of our ministers and MPs can hardly be called great men or even greater mortals...I somehow can't remember their sacrifices for the people, perhaps their candid name callings like daft and lesser mortals to wake us up and appreciate their "well-thought" intentions. This quote I find, is more suitable for them.

"Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it"
by William Pitt, 1770. He became the youngest Prime Minister in 1783 at the age of 24.

So please think of your future, your kids' future as the games begin...you should support the dirty bad guy who surely will win, but make sure you are in the inner circle because I doubt he wants to share his pie with you lesser mortals.

New year...new travel plans, starting tomorrow...what a ride 2011 will be!
