Love is Weird

I don't know anyone that doesn't like Calvin and Hobbes.
Reading the comic makes me sometimes wish I stay weird.
Sometimes love is just weird.

Sometimes my wife is weird, but I love her weirdness, though I don't say it...haha
I am not everybody who wants the same old thing...

Love in many ways

How does one love a porcupine? Cute as it may it, it hurts to be near a defensive creature ain't it?

In just 2 weeks

Just realised in a short 2 weeks since we moved, my wife figured out how to use the washing machine, dryer..without instruction manuals; and figured out how to cook a meal for 2 using a steamer. Now I feel so inadequate in the kitchen and have been banished to doing cleaning up duties. Haha...amazing for a lady who used to burn a brownie she was going to surprise me with when we were dating. I just figured out, how to use the Roomba and if prices of potato chips are cheaper in the Cold Storage opposite our home or NTUC down the road. Time to play catch up!

Love and Death

Recently, my wife asked me why did I choose her to love, to marry. As usual, without much thought I gave her the usual crap or diverting - "Married liao then you ask?" or political correct answers like - "Because you're smart, pretty, can take my crap etc...". But as how my blog goes, it gives me the time to reflect and iron out my thoughts during quiet times or idle times during work!

I've dated many many girls. From scientist to stewardess but rarely one could give me the "You are the One" feeling. My wife gave me another feeling that I've never felt before. A feeling that I realised no amount of rare whiskeys could drown me in, or any fast car could drive away, or no pair of shoes which I can run away with.

She made me not want to go on with life, if she goes before me. I could only imagine myself how lonely I would be if she is no longer in my life. I stared in actual blankness, darkness like a black hole, sucking away molecule by molecule.

All along, I thought I was strong, living by the rule "What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger". Many times, I have been called heartless by many girls but the thought of ever losing my wife would probably crumble my world.

The first time you've met someone

In life, we are all beleaguered by difficulties. But love always seems to level things up and make it all pretty again.
Still remember the first time you've met someone that set your heart fluttering? And sometimes you wonder what they were doing before both of you met? It will be cool sometimes to see life in split screens.

Crazy little thing called love

Happy Valentine's day to all my friends. I had a special and wonderful time; be it being surprised, or busy with preparation work...I realised, it's the little things, the crazy, childish, sweet things that make you giggle like a kid again. Finding back your youth, the return to innocence, now that's the fun of being in love. So despite the commercialization of the date,it is still time to enjoy each others company ; be it in a fancy restaurant or just enjoying take-away nasi lemaks, the company is the most important.

New Year Resolutions

NYE Fireworks on the bay - Marina Bay, Singapore 2011.
Since the mark of self-consciousness developed within, one hardly find the need or will to make any resolutions for new years. Realised that the infantile righteous spirit to improve and better oneself often open the weakened mind to discussions and the possibility of setting purposeless targets. I guess I should just remain a cranky old man who looked vindictive and adamant to changes; yet wield the power to surprise and still be respected.

My supposedly new year resolutions for 2011 is to talk less, be better with time judgement, and articulate better...meaning I need make more allowance for traffic jams or drive faster; practise communication, ace at Taboo yet I cannot talk/interrupt too much. I actually think I need these goals and they will be good, purposeful for me.

The art of self-awareness is remarkable; the subtle pursuit to the betterment of the lives of people around us seems to fall solely on our shoulders without clamouring that the changes might or have already came at a price.

I once thought I found a diary which allows one to keep on writing and recording without consequences, then realised it came with a fantastic shorthand secretary that could record my thoughts, feelings, daily happenings etc for me. How wonderful she is - with the ability to spell check, withhold sarcasms, and could even let me know I was doing double entries in the diary. I soon realised I depended too much on her, often talking too much and fell short on my own personal space to think and do more thought-out writings instead of just mouthing off whatever that comes into mind, which sometimes is just juvenile and stupid.

Remember to always retain the soul, be true to yourself, take time to adjust so that in time to come. we all know that life is a journey and we learn from it constantly. Goals are good to have if they are purposeful; like I now strive to lose 10kg before the big date. Love is all about accepting...the good and the bad - they come together.

The journey begins

Looking back and it is analogous to a shipwreck washed up onto the shore, the devastation from life couldn't be far worse as we pick up pieces of the wreck and try to live again.Slowly but surely, we find ourselves back; we find motivation to grow, to learn, to mature. It might sometimes take up to 40 lives/experiences to know what you really want, and possibly a million others of what-ifs; but all we really needed was just one to make it just right. Then suddenly you realise, all the "bads" that has happened...happened for a reason. And the reason makes one value what has happened and glad that it happened.... This is the journey of life.

When you find that elusive one amongst the vast what-ifs, your mind takes on a new perspective. From embracing all the past "bads" that has happened, and turning them into preparation; from finding the courage to take on the challenges to be that brave man (with proper upbringing - 家教) who wins the fair lady; from picking up a wreck piece and start to build that ship again with solid rock foundation to set sail into the sun. The journey and experiences were all tough, but it's worth every single effort and somewhat sweetens the deal.
The project engineer finally met the toughest challenge he has so far, and is glad to have survived it, now onto the fun bit!

What would you do?

Shared by Precious on Facebook. I think everyone should be more sensitive and caring. I know how apathetic we have become as people living in this age where everyone has to be more productive, more hardworking, more stressed out...but never is there an excuse to be an asshole towards other human beings (unless they really are assholes - I wouldn't feel guilty standing up or beating someone mistreating others who can't stand for themselves).

Ugly Truth

Do you like someone who is smart or just smart looking?

Do you think how you dress yourself determines the person you are?
Sometimes you think you know yourself, that you are above appearances; that you are not shallow - think again.

Guys and gals, you can learn from this.

Degrees of Love

There are varying degrees of love, quite often proclaimed in many different ways.

Proclaimed first: I Love You
Responses:
I Love You
I Love you very much
I Love you thissssss much (widen arms) and for wholeeee eternity
Me too
Ditto
Ok
Mmm...
Huh?

Sometimes you wonder why you go into extending measurements or quantifying something such as "LOVE".
It gives you highs and lows as according to 1) the shitty or wonderful day you are having at work; 2) responds to the better half's answers; 3) how sleepy or drunk your partner is; 4) how romantic you are feeling; 5) million and one other reasons...
Isn't it better to just leave things calm and simple. No simple harmonic motion, just a flat line when your answers will always be the same. That way, you will never wonder or question why today's I-Love-You is stronger/weaker than last week's response. Everything is in equilibrium.

Well, things aren't as simple as you wish it would be.

Love Deficit

Learnt today that of the several lifestyle habits that age you most quickly, one was rather unexpected - Love deficit.

The culprits that will most quickly age you and negatively affect your health are:

1. Poor diet
2. Lack of exercise
3. Stress and worry
4. Exhaustion
5. Unhappiness
6. Lack of love
7. Toxic overload
8. Blockages and congestion of the transportation highways within our bodies.

Looks like one must hasten the look for love.

Strangely an MSN discussion this morning with someone falling in love resulted in more revelations in a field which I thought I was becoming an expert in. But on a pretext of giving advice, I shall approach this topic.

We all know the term or the Oscar winning 1955 old-fashioned movie - "Love is a many Splendored Thing". But surely we should be aware of the pit falls of falling in love.

This is my own list of the pit falls:

1) When hearts are entwined together, it is inevitable when your worlds get revolved around each other. When every little word or remark seem to make a whole lot of matter to you. Be it, "Shall we go jogging?" will spur side connotations like "does she/he mean I am getting too pudgy for my own good"...and for the lady, it might evoke a million more questions and senseless thinking. This over thinking effect bundles up fear, love, hatred all together.

2) Independence somehow seems lost when couples depend more on each other. I believe in the strength and growth between couples as individuals from the togetherness. But an over dependence on one will likely lead to a tipping of scales which eventually will lead to more unbalance in a basket of fears, nitpicking and nagging, and finally a miserable subterfuge of love.

3) Love can be very powerful, but it is another weakness you will inherit. To be emotionless in a relationship is not being in love at all. By being truly in love, you will slowly lose sight of logic; and passion will soon engulf your mortal mind, thinking you can fly or live on mere air and love. And that itself presents your very weakness of not thinking straight. You have classic examples of women becoming drug couriers unknowingly and men donating their CPF pensions to sweet young foreign migrants which somehow disappears as fast as their money evaporates.

4) Love can be easily misunderstand and mistaken for many things. From companionship to flirting to sex, these often come under the disguise for love and the eventual outcome might be just heartbreaking fragments which can be unforgettable baggage for a long time.

5) Time heals all wounds, but sometimes time can be a victim of love. While heartbreaks might be healed over time, it works against youth which is quite detrimental to the prospect of falling in love. When one is young, somehow love seems refreshing and easily obtained - puppy loves all around you. Why is that so? Well, when one gets older, cynicism and wisdom gets in the way. We all know it is all too wiser than to chase after what is impossible, and somehow that limits the way we pursue love. And love somehow enjoys defying being rational and when we completely disregard reasons and rules, love comes a knocking to the irrational and hopelessly lost.

Youth cannot know how age thinks and feels. But old men are guilty if they forget what it was to be young."
J. K. Rowling

May we always remember how love once was and pursue it with faith and good hope.

Insights to a stealing heart

I often wonder why people like to steal another person's love.

This is an insightful piece from Osho worth sharing...starts with a question by a student on why he is only interested in married women but the reply as with most of Osho's replies evolves into a delving into the jewels of life..love, women, relationships.

The disciple asks, "WHY AM I ALWAYS INTERESTED IN MARRIED WOMEN?"

There is nothing special about it, it is a very common disease which exists in almost epidemic proportions. But there are reasons to it.

Millions of people, both men and women, are more interested in the married person. First, the unmarried person shows that nobody has yet desired him or her; the married person shows that somebody has desired him. And you are so imitative that you cannot even love on your own. You are such a slave that when somebody else is loving somebody, only then can you follow. But if the person is alone and nobody is in love with them, then you are suspicious. Maybe the person is not of worth, otherwise why should he or she wait for you?

The married person has great attraction for the imitator.

Secondly, people love less – people, in fact, don’t know what love is – they compete more. The married man... and you become interested. Or the married woman... and you become interested – because now there is a possibility to compete. The triangular fight is possible. The woman is not easily available. There is going to be struggle.

In fact, you are not interested in the woman, you are interested in the struggle. Now the woman is almost a commodity. You can fight for her and you can prove your mettle. You can displace the husband, and you will feel very good – an ego trip; it is not a love trip.

But remember, once you succeed in disposing of the husband, you will not be interested in the woman any more. You want to prove yourself against the man. ’Look, I have taken interest in the unmarried woman now? Again you will start looking for some fight somewhere: you will always make it a triangle. This is not love.

In the name of love there is jealousy, there is competition, there is aggression, there is violence. You want to prove yourself. You want to prove yourself against the man: ’Look, I have taken away your woman.’ Once you have taken away the woman, you will not be interested in the woman at all, because she was not the desired thing; the desired thing was a sort of victory.

I have heard...
A certain prominent businessman lost his wife, and the funeral became a public occasion. All the dignitaries of the town attended. and almost all were known to the bereaved. There was, however, a stranger, and he seemed more upset than anyone. Before the funeral was over, he broke down
completely. The widower-husband asked ’Who was this weeping stranger?’
’Ah’ whispered someone ’didn’t you know? He was your late wife’s lover.’

The bereaved moved across to the sobbing man, patted him on the back, and said ’Cheer up, old boy, cheer up. I shall probably marry again.’

Beware. To fall in love with a married woman or a married man is a disease. Look for reasons. It is not love. There is something else working behind your mind, in your unconscious. Another thing: the married woman is not easily available. That too creates desire. Easy availability kills desire. The more unapproachable, the more inaccessible the woman is, the more the desire; you can dream about her. And, in fact, there is not much possibility that it will ever become an actuality. There is every opportunity to be romantic about a married woman: you can play with your fantasy.

It is not easy to make her available to you. You are not interested in unmarried women because they will not leave much chance for romance. If you are interested, they are ready. There is no space left. There is not that long, long waiting. Many people are interested not in love but in waiting; they say that waiting is far more beautiful than love. In a way it is so, because while you are waiting you are simply projecting, you are dreaming.

Of course, your dream is your dream and you can make it as beautiful as you want. The real woman is going to shatter all your dreams. People are afraid of the real woman. And a married woman becomes more unreal than real. The same is the case with a married man: he is far away. There is not much possibility that he will really enter into a love-relationship with you.

I have heard...
A young man went to a very wise old man, and the young man said ’I am lovesick, sir. Can you help me?

The wise man thought, and he said ’There is only one cure for love, and that is marriage. And if marriage cannot cure it, nothing can cure it! If you get married, you will be cured. Never again will you think about love!’ Yes, marriage cures it so certainly, so absolutely, that if marriage cannot cure love, then nothing can cure it. Then you are incurable. It is good to fall in love with a married woman because then there is no possibility of cure; you remain lovesick.

There are people who enjoy their lovesickness tremendously: weeping. crying, waiting, fantasizing, poeticising, reading, writing poetry, painting, making music – all substitutes.

The real woman is dangerous. The real woman only looks musical from far away. Come close, and she is a REAL woman. She is not a fairy, not a fiction. Her reality will have to be reckoned with. And when a woman comes close to you, not only is she real, but she brings you down from your ivory towers to the earth. In all the cultures of the world, woman is represented as the earth and man as the sky.

The woman is very earth-bound; she gravitates towards the earth. She is more earthly than man, more practical, more pragmatic than man. That’s why you don’t find great women poets, you don’t find great women painters, or great women composers, no. They don’t fly in the sky so much. They grip the earth, they penetrate the earth with their roots and stand there like strong trees.

Man is more like a bird. When man becomes married, the woman brings him also to the earth. To the practical world. Poets don’t like to be married. They always want to remain in love, they don’t want to cure that sickness.

People fall in love with a married woman – this is a halfway house, it is a trick. They can believe that they are in love and they can avoid it also. Love creates great fear because love is a challenge, a great challenge. You will have to grow. You cannot remain juvenile and immature. You will have to grapple with the realities of life. Your so-called great poets are almost always very childish immature people still living in the fairyland of childhood.

They don’t know what reality is; they don’t allow the reality to penetrate into their dreams. A woman is a sure destroyer of fictions. She is not fictitious, she is a fact, a truth. So if you want to believe that you are in love and you still want to avoid love, it is good, safe, to fall in love with a married woman or a married man. This is very tricky, this is a deception, a self-deception. Women are also afraid to fall in love with a free man, because with the free man or free woman there is involvement – a twenty-four hour involvement.

With a married woman the involvement is not that big. You can have a few stolen kisses, you can meet her somewhere in a dark corner – always afraid that the husband may be coming, somebody may see. It is always half-hearted, it is always in a hurry, and you don’t come to know the woman as she is in her twenty-four hour life. You come to know only her painted face, you come to know only her performance, not her truth. When a woman comes out of her house ready to go shopping, she is not the same woman. She is almost a different person. Now she is a managed woman, now she is a performer. In the house they don’t look so beautiful. Out of the house they suddenly become tremendously beautiful, joyful, cheerful. delighted. They again become small, giggling girls in love with life. Their faces are different, radiant. Their eyes are different; their make-up, their performance.

Seeing a woman on the beach, or in the shopping centre, you are seeing a totally different kind of reality. To live with a woman twenty-four hours a day is very mundane – it has to be. But if you really love a woman, you would like to know her reality not her fiction, because love can exist only with reality. And love is capable enough of knowing the reality and yet being able to love her, of knowing all the defects and yet being able to love her. Love is a tremendous strength.

When you are with a person twenty-four hours a day man or woman – you come to know all the defects: all that is good, and all that is bad too; all that is beautiful, and all that is ugly too; all that is like light-rays, and all that is like dark night. You come to know the whole person. Love is strong enough to love the other, knowing all the defects, limitations, frailties that a human being is prone to.
But this fictitious love is not strong enough. It can only love a woman on the movie screen. It can only love a woman in a novel. It can only love a woman in poetry. It can only love the woman as a faraway, distant star. It can only love a woman who is not real.

Love is a totally different dimension. It is falling in love with reality. Yes, reality has defects, but those defects are challenges to growth. Each defect is a challenge to transcend it. And when two persons are really in love, they help each other to grow. They look into each other; they become mirrors to each other: they reflect each other. They help each other; they hold each other. In good times, in bad times, in moments of happiness, in moments of sadness they are together, they are involved –that’s what involvement is all about.

If I am only with you when you are happy and I am not with you when you are unhappy this is not involvement, this is exploitation. If I am only with you when you are flowing, and I am not with you when you are not flowing – then I am not with you at all. Then I don’t love you, I love only myself and I love only my pleasure. ’When you are pleasurable, good; when you become painful I will throw you away.’ This is not love, this is not involvement, this is not commitment. This is not respect for the other person.

It is easy to love somebody else’s wife because he has to suffer the reality and you enjoy the fiction. It is a very good division of labour. But this is inhuman. Human love is a great encounter. And love is only if growth happens out of it, otherwise what type of love is it?

Lovers are enhanced by each other – in every way. Lovers reach to higher peaks of happiness when they are together, and they also reach to the deeper depths of sadness when they are together. Their range of happiness and sadness becomes vast – that’s what love is. Alone, if you cry and weep, your tears don’t have much depth. Have you watched it? Alone, they are shallow. When you weep together with somebody then there is a depth, a new dimension to your tears. Alone you can laugh, but your laughter will be shallow. In fact it will be something insane – only mad people laugh alone. When you laugh with somebody there is a depth in it, there is sanity in it.

Alone, you can laugh, but the laughter will not go very deep, cannot go. Together, it goes to the very core of your being. Two persons together, together in all the climates – day and night, summer and winter – in all the moods, grow. The tree needs all the climates and all the seasons. Yes, it needs the burning-hot summer and it needs the ice-cold winter.

It needs the daylight, the sun showering on it, and it needs the silence of night so it can close into itself and go into deep sleep. It needs silent, cheerful, joyful days; it needs gloomy, cloudy days too. It grows through all these dialectics.

Love is a dialectic. Alone, you cannot grow. Remember always that if you are in love then don’t avoid commitment, don’t avoid involvement. Then go totally into it. Then don’t just stand on the periphery ready to escape if things get too troublesome.

And love is a sacrifice too. You have to sacrifice much... your ego. You have to sacrifice your ambition, you have to sacrifice your privacy, you have to sacrifice your secrets; you have to sacrifice many things. So just to be in a romantic love needs no sacrifice. But when there is no sacrifice there is no growth. Love changes you almost utterly: it is a new birth. You are never the same person again as you were before you loved a woman or a man. You have passed through fire, you are purified. But courage is needed.

You ask: WHY AM I ALWAYS INTERESTED IN MARRIED WOMEN?
Because you are not courageous. You want to avoid the involvement. You want it cheaply, you don’t want to pay the price for it.

Handsome Suit

I just went to catch this Japanese movie with a group of friends, called "Handsome Suit". It is similar to the Hollywood movie Shallow Hal back in 2001.
I think there is a great moral behind the story and it is really funny, so everyone should go watch it!

The thing about this movie, is that it was very apt as we discussed this over a hotpot dinner where a couple was trying to introduce this "ugly" shy friend of theirs to one of the girls. He was apparently very rich, and technically if she marries him, she can confirm be tai-tai. But why doesn't she want? First of all, I think it is a lot more than $ to attract. Secondly, perhaps she should give that "ugly" guy a chance. I told her to stop calling her friend "ugly", and use the word unattractive instead. Because to me, ugliness comes to mind in the form of something more than skin deep since someone with a heart of gold can't be ugly...

Friends always think that I am shallow because I have good looking girlfriends. Aren't they all judgemental? I never let a pretty girl cut my queue, but I would gladly open a door for ladies, irregardless of how they look, because it is the right thing for all men to do. I am a difficult person, complicated with many factors which can turn me off like a light switch. And these girls have all nice non-physical attributes which attracted me to be with them. Like in this movie, there was a pretty woman trying to make an ugly man fall in love with her. Do you think he gave her a chance? No spoilers for those who have yet to catch it.

First of all, I don't think anyone should fall in love with a person because of physical attributes. We cannot deny that physical attractiveness is what brings you closer to the person, before you start to know the person. But what holds the person, is inner beauty. People change and especially attitude towards someone you used to like or so claimed you love'd, might change when perhaps you no longer find her "beautiful".

“Since love grows within you, so beauty grows. For love is the beauty of the soul.”

“It's beauty that captures your attention; personality which captures your heart.”

My kind and wonderful friends have tried to pair me up with so many girls, I almost have lost count going on the dates, #27??? From scientists to stewardess, many are great, wonderful, smart and even rich ladies, some are very pretty, prettier than the girlfriends that I used to have, but somehow they never appealed to me. So why is that so? I believe fate has a part, just as in the show where the girl fell in love with the ugly guy over just one moment in time. But I felt that, that is not all that is needed to make things work - they need to match each other. In one of the lines: "I am the happiest when I am with you." I think that defines everything - Happiness. But then again, sometimes you never know when you are the happiest, until you lose it.

I hope I did not spoil anything for those who are planning to catch the show, as it is really funny and people should all look past physical attributes and know why you like or love the person you are with or are possibly thinking of being with. Ask yourself, why do you love her? If you can strip down the fact that if she grew old, fat and ugly, would you still hold her hands? I, myself am guilty of this that I once shun a girlfriend whom came to find me in University. She was possessive and often came to find me at school and I realized I was scared to be seen with her, why? I wasn't sure anymore, but obviously not because she was old, fat or ugly. But at least now I know it wasn't love. Indeed I was young and naive and have let down many girls. I do hope everyone of them find someone they truly love.

I think like in the movie, everyone should not see things with a biased heart and blinkered eyes. Stop and ask yourself then ask him or her this question, before you start on something magical : "Why do you like me?"

But then again, we live in the world where by our sales and marketing people are all usually attractive; private and personal bankers are also well dressed to the nines. Looks is everything, who wants to see an ugly face? Seriously, how can people change overnight?

Finally

Thinking about it days and nights, often wondering when and how. It constantly flashed across my mind - Eventually it will come, just be patient. Many times, I rushed and failed. To sense and mind, a long-awaited maturity finally set in. When everyone around you has stopped playing and started shopping for prams and diapers; when raising families is a norm, it finally caved upon the puerile psyche.

Slowly, the unfolding starts, revealing parts of the unknown. Apprehensive over what might unfold, I stopped buying toys, shoes, unworn tees. Collections of alcohol, shot glasses, intricate toys, shoes I've amassed over the years stopped in its tracks wondering when I will ever get my own place to display them. Will I ever find "the one" who will accept the infantile?

All along it should never be an acceptance, but the growing out of an unacceptable state of mind. I realised the importance of what IFs and how it should BEs.

I finally know what I want. It's not about making choices or taking chances, it's about knowing what you want and accepting it. It's about knowing what you do not want and not accepting it. Yes, my mind is often in the state of uncertainty, flipping switches in states of 1 or 0.

In saying that I guess, I need to sort out my love life first. Which will lead me to setting up my own family, the part which I am missing and finally ribbing my brains out.

And in my family, rules have to be set. No tolerance of things I hate. If I can do it, why can't the person I choose to share my life with, have done it?

I detest :

1) gambling
2) smoking
3) cheating
4) sloth
5) greed
6) stupidity
7) impatience
8) bad sportsmanship
9) unfilial
10)untrust

Many of which I am guilty of myself and thus at times I do dislike what I have done. If you are a friend, acquaintance, hell-no do what you want. But if we are to be eternally fused together, going forward the feets have to be moving together. We have to be helping one another and understanding each other's limitations, fears, dreams, hopes and goals. So there is a need to know how it should be, how I need to get there.

For the last few years, realising what I have lost and what I want back and I can only reflect upon how did I lose it and how I need to change and improve myself. That's how it should be to lead me to the what if.

So for now, singlehood is a choice as I ponder if I should get my own place amidst such difficult times, but I do need to start living on my own and await the elusive "one" whom I believe will come in "her" own time. The only question that I will stumble over is what if "she" never comes. Only heaven knows.

Serendipity~1

I remember watching this movie starring Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack and somehow it blew me over. It was a crappy romantic movie which normally being a logical analytical person I am, it was impossible and totally out of this world.
But somehow it struck me, that I wish I could have that sort of love where you meet someone totally out of the blue and fall in love within hours of meeting that person. That somehow you felt that fate brought you two together; that somehow you knew that cupid pulled that magical tiny bow driving an arrow through the heart and logic became nonsense and ridiculous all at the same time.

This blog entry was to come after I had time to write about my US trip which I put off for way too long. I came back from New York with a job and the jobscope was what I needed to fill my mind. But New York besides got me started on my career, it somehow cleared my head and I found my soul back. If I had time I will want to blog about how it came about, me finding my soul back. Because without a soul, noone can love or should fall in love. Anyway to cut a long story short, I saw this very cafe which the movie Serendipity was filmed - It was called Serendipity 3 where movie stars, celebs hang out, do check out the website. It passed me by so fast as I was on top of the NY city tour bus. But I knew it wasn't a mistake or just a movie prop, it was indeed for real. The movie was probably spurned from this cafe as it was filmed in 2001 and the cafe was founded in 1954 at 225 East 60th Street. Hope I can visit it the next time I head to NY for work again.

Overwhelmed by the Big Apple

It was a long awaited trip which I had planned to go since my lil' sis had a job assignment to New York. I needed to get away for a long period to clear my mind as it has been a mind-boggling year for me, which over the next few weeks I will blog about my one month stay here in US as I clear my head and clear through my over 2600 photos taken! If we still live in the film age, that would be at least 72 rolls of film!

I've also brought my mom and aunt over - to do my laundry! Hahah just kidding, my mom and aunt were here to visit some friends and get some shopping done, while I utilised my sister's nearby laundromat! This trip has been an adventure waiting to happen as I slowly fill you in with pictures and stories.

As we arrived in the afternoon, we managed to take a walk to Times Square which was overwhelming. If you're done with visiting the Seven Wonders of the World, Times Square is the next stop, seriously. It is filled with the sights and bustling city sounds. Be it the song sang by the Rolling Stones or the movie starring Michael J Fox - The phrase "Bright lights, Big city" was meant for New York. There are massive posters, billboards, lighted neon signs, projection walls all over buildings. Now I know why it is regarded the best place to be on New Year's Eve.

I was destined to come here. 5th Aug '08 - The day I arrived, my sis who never won the raffles draw in her company, won 2 tickets to the Mets game. Off to the Shea Stadium! The 44-year old Shea Stadium will be demolished later this year to make way for the new stadium just next door - which you can see in the picture above.

We were seated just above the batter's box/home plate which gave us the perfect view of the game. It was the San Diego Padres vs the New York Mets.

The stadium was electrifying and the game was exciting with many milestones. One of which was Fernando Tatis's 100th career home run! He had 2 left homers for the night.

I shall not attempt to recap the game, but the match was exciting as Mets beat Padres 6-5.

Special Met's commemorative Budweiser metal beer bottle

Slowly but surely with some beer and cheese nachos and jetlag, my sis soon caught me dozing off. So we started to make our way out of the stadium. But not before a Met's fan proposed to his girlfriend through the big jumbo board as you seen it in many American movies.

How romantic, every sports fan dream.

With Shea Stadium set to be demolished after this season, fans and collectors can buy seats from the ballpark for USD$869 per pair online at Mets.com. I bet this couple will be buying one for keeps.

I guess what they say about New York is true. Women come to New York for the two L's: Labels and Love. Yes, I caught the movie Sex and the City on my flight back to Singapore, though I refused to catch such chick flicks, and I never watched a single episode of the series, I find the movie actually quite good. And my sis has indeed found a boyfriend within months of her arrival - would I find my L? Stay tuned.

Love me, spoil me - The Singaporean Women

Stolen off http://www.straitstimes.com

I love Sundays. Besides getting loads of rest or sports, I get my usual crap articles from the Straits Times. I like it whenever they try to explain the high divorce rates and low/late marriage statistics and particularly about Singaporean Women and their gripe on Singaporean Men. Today's front page on their ST Life is about loving them and spoiling them. Read the FREE online article here, if you haven't already flipped the papers.

The Straits Times conducted surveys on what women would like men to do and how many percentage of men would do the things the women like. For example, paying for 1st dates - 80 per cent of women expect their boyfriends to pay during dates, interestingly, 92 per cent of men surveyed said they would pay. Also paying for meals, opening doors, sending them home and even holding their handbags. Besides dressing up for special occasions, the percentage of Singaporean Men actually exceeds all the expectations of what women would liked. So what is actually the problem here? Are there mismatches in relationships? Or has the interviewing demographic been done at wrong locations where the Men were found patiently waiting at shoe shops, car parks?

I think the real problem here is that Singaporean Women are expecting too much. Let's not make a general sweeping statement here, where i would probably thread on many nice warm loving, dutch-paying ladies out there.Seriously the guys I know wouldn't even think about not paying for meals. Besides expecting all these chivalry, women these days that I have met, they seem to have that understanding that men must have a good paying job, a decent ride and best if he comes with a bachelor pad as well. I think to demand all these things, like an expectation of a job - you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. So with all the effort and amount of money/assets you need to have to attract Singaporean Women, are they really worth the hassle?

I just found out that a peer of mine is marrying a Vietnamese. And I have lot more friends already married to Chinese ladies. With Vietnam and China modernising and getting more affluent, it is no surprise they can easily meet the expectations of Singaporean Men and the plus points they have - they can cook, take care of the house, dress well; some of them are lookers too. Now I have absolutely no idea why aren't the Singaporeans looking that way as we move into a globalised nation. Or perhaps they are, so we can free up the Singaporean Women looking to a nice romantic life with the expats here. I would think getting a Chinese or Vietnam bride might even be a good investment or career move as China and Vietnam develops further.

Hmm..getting a Vietnamese wife, so that I can buy some property there for future investments since they do not allow foreigners to own land..sounds like a decent idea. So where shall We Singaporean Men start?
